Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important element in film making, It allows the picture to be seen giving the exposure. It gives the picture structure texture and helps tell the story by telling the audience the time of day, by setting the mood, by creating the illusion of depth in the picture.

Two main types of lighting, hard focused light and soft shadowless light. Focused hard light, like direct Sunlight makes strong shadows and gives objects shape and texture. Soft light produces very soft or even no shadows, by using soft light from the camera its shadows are hidden behind the objects. Just using soft light is a lazy way of taking pictures. Soft light from the camera fills the shadows from focus lights to the side lowering the contrast of the picture. For this reason it is called the Fill light. The main hard light that lights the subject is called the Key light and the relationship between the Fill and the Fill and the Key Light together is the Lighting contrast.

Lighting units lend themselves to producing the different quality of light. Lights with fresnel lens produce focused hard shadow producing light. Lamps with "open" bulbs are good for producing "soft" light by bouncing of white surfaces or shining through tracing paper or plastic.
